Cornsilk, or maize tassel, is the glossy, thread-like material that is located between an ear of corn and its outer husk.

Some versions of maíz can be found in nearly every meal of the day in Mexico. It comes as no surprise that even corn silk has value in Mexican culture. The caballitos de elote (little hairs of corn), also known as barbas de maíz (corn beard), have been traditionally used for their soothing properties for the urinary tract.

Cornsilk is high in several nutrients, including potassium and vitamin K. Its mildly sweet flavour makes a good-tasting, nutritive and refreshing tea. Cornsilk can be used alone or in combination with other herbs in tea.

It is normally prepared as a soothing tea by boiling water and steeping dried or fresh corn silk for 15 minutes.

Use about 1 tablespoon of Cornsilk per cup of almost boiling water. Cover and let this steep for fifteen to twenty minutes or until cool enough to drink. Strain. Sweeten with raw honey to taste, if you wish.
