Milk thistle (Silybum marianum L.) is a member of the aster family. The name comes from the milky sap that emerges when the leaves are crushed or broken. It is a fairly typical thistle plant, which was originally found in Southern Europe through to Asia, but is now found throughout the world. Milk Thistle has been used traditionally in herbal medicine as an effective, yet gentle liver protectant. The flavonoid silymarin is the main active phytonutrient in milk thistle. It is found at the highest concentrations in the black seeds within the milk thistle flower. Organika’s Milk Thistle is an extract of the potent seed instead of the flower, which contains much lower quantities of silymarin.
Milk thistle and silymarin have powerful antioxidant properties, protecting your body from free radicals and lipid peroxidation that cause cellular damage and premature aging. It also can increase the liver content of glutathione, a powerful antioxidant we produce in the liver, by more than 30%. This means greater liver efficiency with respect to cleansing the body and eliminated toxic substances. It also helps improve digestion.
Silymarin is long recognized for its ability to help treat liver disorders. Organika’s Milk Thistle has a powerful effect on the liver, providing protection against the damage that medications, foods and stress do to overall health. It is also a protective compound against liver-damaging agents such as alcohol. Milk thistle supplementation has been clinically proven effective in reducing the damage of drug and alcohol-related liver damage, cirrhosis, fibrosis and environmental toxins. It can also protect from the damage of these challenges in the first place, allowing milk thistle to be a preventative in combating the daily stressors that your liver faces.
The liver is a very important organ and gland in our body – it has over 500 roles it fills on an ongoing basis! Technically classified as part of the digestive system for its roles in producing bile and other nutrient-digesting substances, it also produces proteins and detoxifies wastes for removal from the body.
Here are some of the other roles of the liver:

Produces bile for the absorption of fats, cholesterol and fat-soluble vitamins

Filters all our blood and removes and recycles old red blood cells

Stores and releases carbohydrates as glycogen to regulate blood sugar and energy levels

Filters out toxins and wastes, like alcohol, drugs, caffeine, hormones and excess cholesterol

Regulates blood clotting and blood pressure

When the liver isn’t functioning optimally, it may show as symptoms of difficulties with the gallbladder and fat absorption, excess estrogen or cholesterol, or low iron levels. When it’s really in trouble, liver diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, or cancer may manifest.

Q: What makes your Milk Thistle different from others on the market?
A: Organika‘s Milk Thistle is unique in that it is sourced from the milk thistle seed and not the flowers. This results in maximum potency, as silymarin is found in the highest concentration in the seed.

Q: What happens if I’ve been abusing my liver for many years?
A: The liver is the only human organ that can regenerate! That means that even if there is substantial damage (up to 75%), new cells and tissue can form to rebuild a healthy liver. Of course, one needs to take out the sources of the damage, and support regeneration with substances like Organika’s Milk Thistle!

Q: How do I know if my liver is overwhelmed?
A: It’s challenging to say for certain, but if you live in this world today, the likelihood your liver is working hard is high. All the toxins from our water, food, air and environment all have to be filtered through the liver, ideally to then be eliminated. Other roles like processing caffeine, alcohol, medications/drugs, and hormones (internally or externally produced) all keep the detoxification pathways busy. And if these liver pathways are full, some of these toxins can be recycled back into the body instead of eliminated. If you are exposing yourself to many of the above challenges daily, chances are your liver may be spending more time and energy trying to detox than keeping your blood clean and energy balanced. Start by decreasing your toxic exposure, and be mindful of the caffeine/alcohol/drugs you consume. Give your liver a break!

Q: Can I take milk thistle long term?
A: Milk thistle doesn’t work overnight, so taking it for the very short term is not recommended. It is however used for longer time frames, especially when supporting recovery from liver diseases. If using continuously for years, please consult your healthcare practitioner.
